ABOUT

GrowTH is a non-denominational Christian charity founded by and run through local evangelical churches. Our main project is a night shelter which we for 7 months each year, welcoming homeless men and women into our church buildings and providing meals, a bed and a warm welcome. 

In July 2015 we opened our first two supported homes to support former guests of the shelter in transitioning from homelessness to independent living. We now have four flats and a total of six residents. The flats are all on one housing estate in Tower Hamlets, East London. We are looking for a self-motivated and compassionate individual to manage our Supported Housing project and support the residents of the housing in various ways, including gaining skills, getting training and employment, and moving into more independant accommodation.

OVERVIEW OF JOB ROLE

  1. Provide overall management of the Supported Housing Project including:

    1. Oversee the good maintenance of the properties and furnishings.

    2. Ensure the properties comply with safety checks and requirements.

    3. Provide one-to-one support to residents.

    4. Oversee the provision of opportunities to grow in faith for residents.

    5. Ensure sufficient policies and procedures are in place for the project.

    6. Oversee the payment of rent and bills to ensure the financial viability of the project.

    7. Manage referrals to the project and the ‘move on’ options for residents.

    8. Explore other possible supported housing options for GrowTH.

DUTIES OF JOB ROLE

Overseeing the good maintenance of the properties and furnishings.

  • Ensure that decoration, fittings and furnishings are of good quality and are replaced when needed

  • Liaise with Poplar HARCA and contractors regarding repairs and works

Ensure the properties comply with safety checks and requirements.

  • Weekly checks recorded to ensure fire safety is upheld in the properties

  • Gas and electric safety certificates obtained as needed

Provide one-to-one support to residents.

  • Give support to residents around their support needs, such as money management, job seeking and life skills.

  • Assist residents in accessing support provided by other organisations and services

  • Ensure residents are adequately prepared for ‘move on’ and, as far as possible, ensure they move on into suitable accommodation

 Oversee the provision of opportunities to grow in faith for residents.

  • Pray daily for the residents in the supported houses.

  • Sensitively and appropriately initiate conversations about faith and Jesus with residents.

  • Assist residents in accessing local church communities, including Sunday services.

 Ensure sufficient policies and procedures are in place for the project.

  • Write and keep updated policies around the various aspects of the Supported Housing Project.

  • Ensure policies and procedures are implemented and altered when needed.

 Oversee the payment of rent and bills to ensure the financial viability of the project.

  • Support residents in paying the rent and bills either from Housing Benefit or wages.

  • Ensure payments are received by GrowTH and follow the project procedures around rent arrears.

 Manage referrals to the project and the ‘move on’ options for residents.
  • Discuss with the Advocate Workers about which GrowTH guests are appropriate for Supported Housing referrals.

  • Assess referrals and meet with prospective residents to explain the project and determine who should be accepted as a resident.

Explore other possible supported housing options for GrowTH.

  • Research and make enquiries about ways in which GrowTH can manage more properties to run as Supported Housing.

  • Visit other Supported Housing projects.

Additional Responsibilities

  • You will be expected to participate in prayer meetings.

  • You will report to the Operations Manager on a regular basis.

  • As with any small charity, there will be times when you will need to assist in other reasonable tasks outside your job role.

Personal faith and values
  • A committed member of a local church.
  • An understanding and practice of evangelical belief and experience of sharing faith with marginalised adults.
  • An understanding of Jesus’ compassion for those without home, hope and help.
  • Faith that God can transform, heal and save any person, regardless of their current situation.
Education/ Qualification
  • University degree preferred.
Experience
  • At least one year’s experience of providing support to people that are homeless.
  • Experience of managing a project or team delivering a service to those on the margins.
Skills
  • High level of administrative skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and manage competing demands.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Able to envision and motivate others about a project.
  • Highly competent computer and Internet user, including the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.

Additional Expectations
  • The role is vocational and will require some flexibility with regards to hours.
  • The role includes performance standards, targets and deadlines.
  • The job role will involve attending meetings across Tower Hamlets. Therefore access to a bike and willingness to cycle in the borough would be an advantage.
  • A willingness to drive the GrowTH minibus in Tower Hamlets would be an advantage.
